Undoubtedly, the music industry has had a profound effect on the emerging fashion trends of 2010. The surge of new rave and indie rock bands have made their mark on the design and fashion of t shirts, with numerous effects. In fact, it is hard to believe t shirts were once only sold as a plain white shirt. Now, men's tops and t shirt come in a variety of vibrant colors and creative designs.
The t shirt was worn primarily as a type of underwear in the 19th century, and the garment has experienced many evolutions during its long history. At the turn of the century, Europeans began wearing the t shirt, and the trend caught on fast. During World War I, U.S. soldiers who were accustomed to sweating profusely in their heavy wool uniforms welcomed the soft airy tee, which then was made from Egyptian cotton.
The trend caught on with the U.S. military, at least. By World War II, the Army and Navy branches of the service were issuing white cotton t shirts as part of the standard uniform, although the shirts were still to be worn underneath the uniform. As soldiers were sent to warmer parts of the world, however, they would shed the outer uniform and wear only the t shirt. Pictures of these soldiers working and relaxing in their t shirts encouraged stateside men to try wearing them in the same manner.
In the years following World War II, international movie stars such as James Dean, Marlon Brando and John Wayne began wearing t shirts, furthering the popularity of the garment. Since then t shirt fashion trends have changed repeatedly. The styles from the 1960s and 1970s set the stage for trends that continue today. Ringer t shirts were the rage in the '60s, along with silk-screened and tie-dyed styles. In the '70s, rock music enthusiasts throughout the world were wearing the black concert tee printed with the logo or symbol of their favorite rock band.
The next two decades witnessed the rise of slogan tees. In the 1980s, the ever-popular tees that were becoming a staple of the American wardrobe carried slogans such as "I'm with stupid" or "Frankie says Relax" - a nod to the '80s band Frankie Goes to Hollywood. But by the new millennium, with the once-ubiquitous slogan tees starting to fade as a common fashion item, the "personal branding" t shirts emerged as the new phenomenon and continue to be a staple of t shirt fashion design.
The newest trend in t shirt fashion seems to be twofold: color and personalization. Bold, bright colored t shirts are everywhere, with designs that reflect everything imaginable, from artists to musicians to religion to, well, whatever! Companies on the Internet and new technology have opened up a whole world for t shirt wearers; you can design your own t shirt at minimal cost and have a one-of-a-kind creation or reproduce it for a quick money-maker. One thing is for sure - the t shirt is definitely here to stay.
